The official “Bike Month 2017” debuted on Thursday, May 4, 2017. We were well represented on this important day that included an official Bike Month Proclamation event at the capital. An impressive group of RABA members were on hand to help usher in this event along with members from the Williamsburg club. A beautiful sunny day to kick off this month of cycling –and endorsed by the Governor’s wife!
If you perused the great calendar for Bike Month Events published from Sports Backers, you recognized that a number of cycling events were scheduled for literally every day of the month. If you missed that, take another peek as more fun continues to evolve until May 31!
Beyond the kick off day on May 4th, there have been multiple opportunities for cycling. Even with the rainy forecasts, many RABA members have been joining the opportunities and adding their loyal support to some important causes.
For example, on May 6, a big turnout (almost 100 from RABA) joined the 2017 Operation Rise & Conquer event to support local veterans.
On May 7, several joined the annual Pedal through the Petals event – A guided tour of Richmond’s Gardens.
Of course there was the May New Riders Ride and the annual Cap2Cap ride, which, were rainy events. However, we understand a number of dedicated souls joined these as well.
As this article heads to print for the June RABA newsletter, there are still many rides on the calendar. In particular, note that on May 28, RABA is collaborating with the Bike Walk RVA folks to sponsor the Ashland Clunker Ride (http://www.sportsbackers.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/BikeMonth_2017Calendar_r3.pdf).
This also commemorates the graduation of a new crop of Bike Walk Advocacy Champions – this time representing Hanover County. Why is this important? Clearly the long time efforts of RABA coupled with those of the Bike Walk Advocacy Champions (and many others) are paving the way for increased cycling opportunities in our great city – http://www.styleweekly.com/richmond/richmond-wants-to-double-its-miles-of-bike-lanes-this-year-is-that-enough-to-keep-cyclists-safe/Content?oid=3241917
